Dishwasher Not Starting

Separate a delayed or locked control from a door, supply or service fault using only normal controls and visible checks.

Visible checks only
Before you start

Keep guards, panels and safety devices in place. Stop whenever the next action needs tools, live testing, disconnection or access beyond the owner's manual.

Checks you can safely make

  1. Read the control state

Look for Control Lock, Delay Start, Sleep or an error message. Use the model manual to cancel the displayed mode rather than guessing a button combination.

  2. Close the door correctly

Check that a rack, utensil or oversized item is not blocking the door. Close it firmly and listen for the normal latch response without forcing it.

  3. Confirm normal supply conditions

Verify the accessible water shutoff is open and that the sink has water. Check whether the display or interior light shows that the appliance has power.

  4. Retry a simple cycle

Cancel any pending cycle, select a short normal program and follow the exact Start or Start/Resume sequence printed for the model, including any required door-close timing.

What to do next

Record which lights respond, the selected cycle and any error code. If normal controls, door closure and visible supplies are correct, arrange authorized appliance service with the model number.

Common questions

Why does Start flash but the dishwasher not run?

Many models require the door to latch within a set time after Start, while an active lock or delay can also prevent immediate operation. Check the model manual.

Should I keep resetting the breaker?

No. One reset can identify a simple interruption, but a repeated trip indicates an electrical or appliance fault that needs qualified diagnosis.
