7 wallpaper rollsProject shopping list
Use your result as a starting point, then confirm package coverage, product instructions and local requirements before purchasing.
How the calculation works
net wall area × (1 + pattern waste) ÷ roll coverage
Enter each project area, choose the measurement system, then adjust waste and real package coverage. Packaged materials round up so the shopping list never suggests part of a box, sheet or panel.
How to use the wallpaper calculator
Measure room length, width and wall height, deduct doors and large windows, then allow for pattern matching and trimming. ProjectMeter divides the net order area by usable coverage and rounds up to complete wallpaper rolls.

- 01
Measure the room perimeter
Measure wall-to-wall length and width at floor level. The calculator uses twice the combined length and width to represent four walls. Add spaces with different heights as separate rooms.
- 02
Measure wall height
Measure from finished floor or baseboard line to the ceiling. Use the tallest practical drop when ceilings vary, because every wallpaper strip must be cut long enough before trimming.
- 03
Count major openings
Enter standard doors and large windows to remove their approximate area. Small openings may not reduce the roll order because surrounding drops, matching and offcuts still consume material.
- 04
Use usable roll coverage
Enter the usable square-foot or square-metre coverage supplied for the exact wallpaper. Pattern repeat, roll width and drop length can reduce usable coverage even when two rolls have the same nominal area.
12 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls
- 1 standard door and 1 large window
- 15% pattern and trimming allowance
- 56 sq ft usable coverage per roll
- Four room walls
Gross wall area is 352 sq ft and estimated openings remove 36 sq ft. After the 15% allowance, 363.4 sq ft is ordered, so the calculator rounds up to 7 complete rolls.

Wallpaper calculator FAQ
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Large openings can be deducted, but small openings often do not reduce the order because adjacent strips still need full-height cuts. This tool uses editable counts with standard planning deductions.
Why is pattern waste important?
Repeating motifs must align from one drop to the next. Matching can move the start point of each strip and leave unusable offcuts, especially with large or half-drop repeats.
What does usable coverage per roll mean?
It is the area you can realistically hang from one roll after its width, length, wall drop and pattern repeat are considered. Use the manufacturer or retailer product value whenever available.
