Before you start

Checks you can safely make

  1. Stay out of the water

    Do not enter a flooded area or touch a plug, extension, switch or pump while standing on a wet surface. Start with a dry viewing position.

  2. Check visible power status

    From dry ground, note whether the dedicated GFCI or alarm shows a trip. Do not repeatedly reset a circuit or use an extension cord as a workaround.

  3. Observe the float

    Without reaching into water, look for a float held by a hose, cable or debris. The float must move through the range specified in the pump manual.

  4. Inspect the exterior discharge

    Check whether the outlet is blocked by ice, soil or debris and whether discharged water is flowing back toward the foundation.
