How the calculation works

length × width × depth

Enter each project area, choose the measurement system, then adjust waste and real package coverage. Packaged materials round up so the shopping list never suggests part of a box, sheet or panel.

MEASURE WITH CONFIDENCE

How to use the mulch calculator

Enter garden-bed length, average width and installed depth. ProjectMeter converts the volume to bulk cubic yards or cubic metres and shows a 2 cu ft bag alternative.

Formula and guidance reviewed August 22, 2026. Always confirm the final order with product instructions and project requirements.
STEP BY STEP

What to measure

  1. 01

    Trace the bed shape

Split curved or irregular beds into smaller rectangles. Use an average width only when the curve changes gradually.

  2. 02

    Measure installed depth

Measure the planned finished layer, not the height of a loose pile. Existing mulch may reduce the new depth needed.

  3. 03

    Add every bed

Create a separate bed entry for each distinct section, then let the calculator combine the volume before ordering.

  4. 04

    Compare bags with bulk

Bulk delivery can suit larger projects, while bags may be easier for small areas or difficult access.

WORKED EXAMPLE

20 × 6 ft bed at 3 in deep

  • Average rectangular footprint
  • 5% allowance
  • 2 cu ft bags
Calculated result

The estimate is 1.17 cubic yards, or 16 two-cubic-foot bags as an alternative.

AVOID COSTLY REWORK

Common mistakes before you buy

  • Keep mulch away from siding, tree trunks and drainage openings.
  • Product texture and settlement change the apparent depth after installation.
  • Confirm delivery access and the supplier's cubic-yard increment before ordering bulk material.
FROM QUANTITY TO BUDGET

Compare the complete project cost

Your material quantity is only one part of a quote. Preparation, removal, access, finishing and local labour can change the installed total.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Mulch calculator FAQ

How deep should mulch be?

The right depth depends on the material, existing layer and landscape goal. Many projects use a few inches, but follow plant, site and product guidance and avoid piling mulch against trunks or structures.

How many 2 cu ft bags are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet, so it equals 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags before allowance. Complete-bag purchasing means rounding up.

How do I measure a curved mulch bed?

Split the bed into several shorter rectangles and enter each one, or use length times a carefully measured average width for a gradual curve.
