Toilet Keeps Running
Use dye-free visual checks at the tank to identify a stuck chain, seal or fill level without forcing brittle parts.

Keep guards, panels and safety devices in place. Stop whenever the next action needs tools, live testing, disconnection or access beyond the owner's manual.
Checks you can safely make
- Confirm where water moves
Remove only the tank lid, set it safely on a towel and watch whether water enters the overflow tube or leaks past the flush seal into the bowl.
- Free the handle and chain
Make sure the handle returns and the chain has slight slack rather than holding the flapper or canister open.
- Check the seal surface
Shut off the toilet supply, flush the tank down and wipe mineral debris from the user-removable seal if the manufacturer's instructions permit.
- Compare the fill level
The water should stop below the top of the overflow tube at the level marked for the valve or tank. Use only the model's documented float adjustment.
Common questions
Why does a toilet refill every few minutes?
Water is often leaking slowly from the tank into the bowl through a worn or poorly seated flush seal, causing the fill valve to restart.
Is water entering the overflow tube normal?
The refill tube may direct a small stream into it during filling, but the tank water level should not continuously spill over its top.
