Air Conditioner Not Cooling

Check the thermostat, filter and unobstructed outdoor airflow without touching refrigerant or high-voltage components.

Before you start

Keep guards, panels and safety devices in place. Stop whenever the next action needs tools, live testing, disconnection or access beyond the owner's manual.

Checks you can safely make

  1. Verify the thermostat call

Set the mode to Cool, fan to Auto and the setpoint below room temperature. Wait several minutes because many systems include a restart delay.

  2. Check the return-air filter

Turn the system off and replace a visibly clogged, user-serviceable filter with the correct size and airflow direction.

  3. Open the air path

Confirm supply registers and return grilles are not closed or covered. Note whether airflow is weak everywhere or only in one room.

  4. Observe the outdoor unit

From a safe distance, remove only loose leaves around the cabinet. Note fan operation, unusual sound or visible ice; do not remove a panel or wash live equipment.

What to do next

If cooling does not return after settings, filter and airflow checks, give an HVAC technician the indoor/outdoor observations and any thermostat error code.

Common questions

Why is the AC fan running but the air is warm?

The thermostat fan may be set to On, airflow may be restricted, or the outdoor refrigeration system may not be operating. The latter needs professional diagnosis.

Should I keep running an iced-up AC?

No. Turn cooling off and arrange diagnosis; continued operation can worsen the condition.
