Tile material and rating

Ceramic, porcelain, stone and glass vary widely in material price and cutting time. For floors, confirm the tile's wear rating and whether it is approved for the expected traffic and moisture.

Substrate and waterproofing

A flat, stable base matters more than the finish pattern. Floor leveling, cement board, uncoupling membrane, shower waterproofing and repair of hidden water damage can add far more than the tile itself.

Pattern and room geometry

Diagonal layouts, mosaics, niches, stairs and many corners create more cuts and waste. Large-format tile can reduce grout lines but may demand a flatter surface and specialized handling.

DIY versus professional installation

A small backsplash over a sound, flat wall can suit a careful DIYer. Wet rooms, heated floors, stone, large-format panels and questionable substrates need correct movement joints and waterproofing details. Ask the installer which standards and product systems govern the assembly.

How much extra tile should I buy?
