What a complete price should include
A useful estimate separates the base installation from preparation, removal and finishing. Check that every bid states the same scope before comparing totals.
- Clearing or excavation stated in the scope
- Geotextile and graded base courses where designed
- Delivered aggregate by named type and compacted depth
- Grading, rolling, drainage shaping and cleanup
Cost drivers that change the quote
Compacted depth, not loose volume
Driveways may need multiple aggregate sizes and four to six inches or more of compacted material. Delivery tickets should match the calculated tonnage and specified layers.
Drainage and subgrade
Soft soil, standing water and steep grades need correction before decorative gravel arrives. Culverts, ditches and geotextile can cost more than the surface layer but protect the investment.
Material and hauling
Local crushed stone is often cheaper than decorative river rock, bluestone or marble. Freight, minimum loads and equipment access strongly affect small or remote projects.
DIY versus professional installation
Spreading a small top-up is manageable, but a new driveway requires excavation, correct crown or crossfall, multiple compacted lifts and heavy equipment. DIY savings disappear if soft spots and runoff require reconstruction.
Questions to put in the written quote
- Measured area, layer depths and expected compacted volume
- Aggregate type, gradation, source and delivered tonnage
- Subgrade, fabric, drainage and edge treatment
- Equipment access, compaction method and maintenance allowance
Frequently asked questions
How deep should driveway gravel be?
Current guidance commonly discusses four to six inches, but soil, vehicle load and whether a structural base exists can change the required section.
Is pea gravel suitable for every driveway?
Rounded particles move more readily than angular compacting stone. The correct base and top course depend on grade, climate and traffic.
Why is delivery a large part of the price?
Aggregate is heavy and relatively low-value per ton, so truck distance, load minimums and site access materially affect cost.

Prices vary by location, access and specification. Market-price references establish the planning range; official and industry technical references support the safety, measurement and scope guidance. Neither replaces a local written quote, product instructions or applicable code.
