Garbage Disposal Not Working

Use the switch, cooling period and manufacturer reset—never fingers or improvised tools—to identify a simple overload.

Before you start

Keep guards, panels and safety devices in place. Stop whenever the next action needs tools, live testing, disconnection or access beyond the owner's manual.

Checks you can safely make

  1. Switch it fully off

Turn the wall switch off and stop using the sink. Never place a hand in the grinding chamber, even when the unit is silent.

  2. Allow the overload to cool

Wait several minutes after a jam or heavy load. The built-in overload protector may need time before it can reset.

  3. Press the manufacturer reset

With the switch off, press the small red reset button on the bottom of the disposal. If it will not stay in, wait another ten minutes and try once.

  4. Make one controlled test

Run cold water, stand clear and briefly turn the disposal on. Turn it off immediately if it hums, leaks or makes a metal impact sound.

What to do next

Leave the switch off and arrange disposal service or replacement if the reset will not hold or the unit remains jammed. A plumber or electrician may be needed depending on the symptom.

Common questions

Where is the garbage disposal reset button?

On many InSinkErator models it is a small red button on the underside of the unit. Check your model manual before reaching under the sink.

Should I keep pressing reset?

No. One reset after cooling is a diagnostic step. Repeated trips indicate a jam, overload or electrical fault that needs correction.
